Hope in Action: FMS Bringing Responds After Hurricane Melissa

When Hurricane Melissa devastated parts of Jamaica, many communities were left facing difficult days. Homes were damaged, electricity and clean water were unavailable in many areas, and families struggled to access basic necessities such as food and supplies. In moments like these, the strength of community and compassion becomes especially important.

In response to the crisis, Feed My Sheep (FMS) Outreach Ministry, in partnership with the Church of God (Seventh Day) Jamaica Conference Mission Team and the local Church of God (Seventh Day) Davis congregation, mobilized to support affected families. Together, the teams traveled to two impacted parishes to bring relief, encouragement, and practical support to communities working to recover from the storm.

Meeting Immediate Needs

The outreach team delivered care packages and prepared hot meals for families who had been severely affected by the hurricane. For many residents who were still without electricity and reliable access to food, the support came at a critical time.

As volunteers served meals to families, one moment stood out as a powerful reminder of why this work matters.

After receiving her meal, one mother quietly asked a volunteer, “It’s six of us… may I have one more food?”

The request reflected the reality that many families were facing—parents trying to stretch whatever resources they had to care for their children. Moved with compassion, the FMS volunteer immediately ensured that each child in the family received a meal.

It was a simple act, but it captured the heart of the mission: serving people with dignity, compassion, and care in moments when they need it most.

Bringing Encouragement Alongside Relief

Beyond the meals and care packages, volunteers spent time speaking with residents, offering encouragement, and listening to their experiences after the storm. In the midst of damaged homes and disrupted communities, these conversations brought reassurance and hope.

Families were reminded that even during difficult times, they were not forgotten.

Children smiled as volunteers interacted with them, and many residents expressed deep gratitude for the presence of people willing to travel and serve their community.

Supporting Relief Efforts on a Larger Scale

The mission of service did not stop in the field. The FMS team also volunteered at the Food For The Poor warehouse, where they joined a large-scale relief effort preparing supplies for affected communities.

Working together with other volunteers, the team helped pack approximately 2,000 care packages destined for areas hardest hit by the hurricane—often referred to as ground zero.

Each package represented hope for a family in need, containing essential supplies that would help households begin the difficult process of recovery.

By contributing both in the warehouse and on the ground in communities, FMS Outreach was able to support the relief effort from multiple angles—helping ensure that aid reached as many families as possible.

The Power of Partnership

This initiative demonstrated the incredible impact that can occur when organizations unite around a shared mission.

Through the collaboration of Feed My Sheep Outreach Ministry, the Church of God (Seventh Day) Jamaica Conference Mission Team, the Church of God (Seventh Day) Davis congregation, and partners such as Food For The Poor, relief was delivered more efficiently and compassionately to communities in need.

Together, these partnerships transformed compassion into action.

A Mission Rooted in Service

The work carried out after Hurricane Melissa reflects the core mission of FMS Outreach—to serve communities with love, dignity, and practical support, especially during times of hardship.

Disasters may damage buildings and disrupt communities, but acts of kindness and unity help rebuild hope.

From preparing meals for families, to ensuring that every child was fed, to packing thousands of care packages for communities in need, every effort was driven by a simple but powerful belief:

Serving others is one of the greatest ways to restore hope.

As recovery continues across the affected parishes, Feed My Sheep Outreach Ministry remains committed to standing alongside communities, offering support, encouragement, and compassion wherever it is needed most.

Because even after the storm has passed, the work of rebuilding hope continues.

Even in the aftermath of disaster, hope can rise through service, partnership, and the willingness of people to care for one another.

And through every meal shared, every care package delivered, and every word of encouragement spoken, a powerful message continues to echo:

Kindness has the power to restore hope.
